General
The Gateway is a physical module that connects different busses (mostly CAN busses) to allow them to exchange data. Also, the OBD connector is connected to it, to allowing diagnostics hardware to connect to all those modules.
Installation list
In this setting all installed electric systems installed in the car that communicate via bus have to be enabled. Usually, one checked system means one physical control unit. For example, if the car has the "Tire Pressure Monitoring System" module installed, it needs to be checked here. However, there are two exceptions:
Virtual modules
Some modules need to be enabled, even if there is not a physical module present. For example the rear door electronic modules in cars where the electronic parts are connected to the corresponding front doors. Those modules can not be diagnosed. But if they are not enabled in the installation list the Gateway will show the error "Incorrectly coded". If this error is present, one way to find out which virtual modules need to be enabled to make the error disappear is to check which modules VCDS lists in the AutoScan. If there are modules there, which are not in the installation list, they might be missing there and should be activated.
Non-diagnostic modules
Some modules are connected to a bus, but can't be diagnosed. For example the Automatic Transmission Selector Lever is connected to the powertrain CAN-bus, but has no diagnosis address. If this module has errors, they are stored in the error memory of the transmission ecu.
